A MASTERWORK BY SEVENTEENTH-CENTURY PAINTER VIOLANTE SIRIES CERROTI RESTORED FOR FLORENTINE CHURCH
Violante Siries Cerroti’s masterwork miraculously survived being immersed in mud when Florence’s 1966 flood ravaged the city, destroying over 14,000 works of art. The painting needed restoration, but no one knew how much, until the restorers Elizabeth Wicks and Nicoletta Mantovani removed it from its niche, fifty years after the disaster. The Virgin Mary Presents the Baby Jesus to Santa Maria Maddalena de’ Pazzi resides in the sacristy of the church of Santa Maria Maddalena de’ Pazzi, in the center of Florence, Italy. A leading paintress of her day, Siries Cerroti flourished in eighteenth-century Florence, where she worked as an esteemed portraitist for Tuscany dynasties and Grand Tour Travelers. The restoration was sponsored by the Advancing Women Artists Foundation in 2016.
UN CAPOLAVORO DELLA PITTRICE SETTECENTESCA VIOLANTE SIRIÈS CERROTI, RESTAURATO IN UNA CHIESA FIORENTINA
Il capolavoro di Siriès Cerroti è miracolosamente sopravvissuto, dopo che l’alluvione del 1966 ha devastato e sommerso di fango la città di Firenze, distruggendo oltre 14,000 opere d’arte. Il quadro aveva bisogno di un restauro, ma nessuno sapeva quanto, fino a che i restauratori, Elisabeth Wicks e Nicoletta Mantovani non l’hanno rimosso dalla nicchia in cui si trovava, quasi cinquant’anni dopo il disastro. La Madonna presenta Gesù Bambino a Santa Maria Maddalena de’ Pazzi e si trova nella sagrestia della chiesa di Santa Maria Maddalena de’ Pazzi, nel centro di Firenze. All’epoca una pittrice di grande successo, Siries Cerroti esordì nel diciottesimo secolo a Firenze, dove lavorava come stimata ritrattista per le dinastie toscane ed i viaggiatori del Grand Tour. Il restauro è stato sponsorizzato dalla Advancing Women Artists Foundation nel 2016.
